Rebuilding the Walls: Standing Firm Against the Schemes of Spiritual Wickedness.

When Sanballat heard we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and greatly enraged. He ridiculed the Jews... 'What are those feeble Jews doing?'... But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat." – Nehemiah 4:1-3, 9 (NIV)

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. – Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV)

Introduction:

We live in a time when our society's walls of morality, truth, and freedom are crumbling. Nehemiah, a relatively unknown figure, was called to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem amidst significant opposition, both from enemies outside and from those within who had grown complacent. Today, as ideologies like Socialism are tearing down the Spiritual and cultural walls of our nation, God is calling us, like Nehemiah, to rise and rebuild.

But we must recognize that the battle is not merely political. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12 that we are in a spiritual war against forces of darkness. Just as Nehemiah faced opposition from Sanballat and others who sought to mock and undermine his work, we, too, face opposition from spiritual wickedness in high places, often disguised as progressive ideologies that seek to erode the Biblical foundations of our society.

Illustration:

Nehemiah faced both external threats from enemies like Sanballat, who mocked and ridiculed the Jews for their efforts to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, and internal threats from within his people, who had become comfortable in their broken state. Similarly, today, we face external threats from those pushing ideologies that oppose Biblical truth, such as Socialism, which seeks to replace God with government and undermine individual responsibility.

Yet, just as dangerous are the internal threats—the complacency of Christians who have been lulled into accepting cultural norms that contradict God's Word. Many have become comfortable with compromise, failing to see the spiritual battle behind the political rhetoric. Like Nehemiah, we must post a guard and be vigilant in prayer and action.

Application to Current Events:

Socialism is often presented as a solution to economic inequality, but at its core, it promotes dependence on government over God and often leads to the suppression of religious freedoms. We see this today as more policies push for government control over individual rights, replacing faith-based charity and stewardship with state-mandated redistribution. This aligns with the warnings in Scripture about spiritual wickedness operating in high places (Ephesians 6:12).

Nehemiah teaches us the importance of standing firm and discerning the true nature of the opposition. Just as Sanballat and Tobiah used ridicule, intimidation, and false alliances to distract Nehemiah, today's culture often uses the guise of justice or equity to promote systems that erode Biblical values. We must be wise to these schemes and stay committed to rebuilding the walls of truth and righteousness.

God's View and Hope:

While the opposition to Biblical truth may seem overwhelming, Nehemiah's story reminds us that God assures us of victory. Nehemiah didn't rely on his own strength—he constantly turned to God in prayer, even as he organized the people to rebuild. Our call is also to stay rooted in prayer, trusting that God will strengthen us to stand firm in the face of opposition.

Our battle is Spiritual, but God has equipped us with His armor (Ephesians 6:10-18). We are called to be both builders and warriors—rebuilding the Spiritual walls of our society through prayer, action, and faithfulness to God's Word.

Conclusion and Call to Action:

As we approach this crucial election, Christians must wake up to the reality of our battle. Socialism and other ideologies that seek to replace God with government are not just political issues; they are Spiritual issues. We must be like Nehemiah—willing to rebuild, stand firm in the face of mockery, and pray without ceasing.

Let us commit ourselves to prayer and action, rebuilding the walls of truth in our society and standing firm against spiritual wickedness. God is calling His people to be the watchmen, the builders, and the warriors in this time of significant opposition. We must be vigilant, for the battle belongs to the Lord, who has already equipped us for victory.

Closing Prayer:

Lord, we thank You for Nehemiah's example, who stood firm in the face of opposition and rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem through Your strength. Give us the wisdom to discern the Spiritual battle behind the political ideologies of our time. Strengthen us to stand firm against the schemes of the enemy and help us rebuild the walls of truth in our nation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
