Mini-Sermon: Change is a Process.

Key Verse: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” – Colossians 3:2

Main Point: Biblical change is a lifelong process of choosing God’s will over our own desires. The inner conflict we experience is evidence of this transformation, and victory comes through setting our hearts and minds on Christ.

Message: Change is problematic because it’s a battle. Romans 7:19-25 describes this struggle vividly: Paul, the great apostle, confesses his own war between wanting to do what’s right and falling into sin. This is a universal experience for every believer. The flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit (Galatians 5:17), creating tension as we seek to align our lives with God’s will.

But here’s the good news: change is a process, not an overnight transformation. Romans 8:5-9 reminds us that those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on what the Spirit desires. This means every day, we must make intentional choices to focus on God’s desires instead of our own. II Corinthians 5:15 calls us to live for Christ, who died for us, not ourselves.

Think of it like a journey. Philippians 3:12-14 encourages us to press on, forgetting what lies behind and straining toward what is ahead. Growth takes time, effort, and persistence. Colossians 3:1-2 challenges us to set our hearts on things above, where Christ is seated, and not get distracted by earthly temptations.

An illustration: Imagine you’re climbing a mountain. Some days, the path is steep and rocky, and you feel like giving up. On other days, the way is smoother, and you can see the summit. The key is to keep moving upward, step by step. In the same way, Biblical change requires daily decisions to trust God and keep going, even when it’s hard.

Application: Ask yourself today: Are your choices reflecting a desire to please God or yourself? Start small—when faced with a conflict, pause and pray. Ask God to help you choose His way, even if it’s uncomfortable or difficult. Commit to spending time in His Word daily, renewing your mind and strengthening your Spirit-led desires.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your grace in the change process. Help us choose Your will over our desires, even when the battle is brutal. Fix our hearts and minds on You, and strengthen us daily as we press on toward becoming more like Christ. In His name, amen.
